1. Who we are
Mneme is made by Kial Harrison, a developer based in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). For any personal information described in this policy that we process, we are the data controller.
For privacy questions and data protection requests: privacy@kialharrison.com. For help with the app: support@kialharrison.com.
2. What happens on your Mac
Mneme is designed so that the information it handles never leaves your Mac. We cannot see, access or recover any of the following, because none of it is sent to us.
| Information | What Mneme does with it | Where it's kept |
|---|---|---|
| Your voice (microphone audio) | Captured only while you hold your dictation key or while hands-free dictation is on. Transcribed by a speech model running on your Mac's Neural Engine. | In memory only, and discarded once transcribed. Audio is never saved to disk. |
| Dictated text | Pasted at your cursor. Mneme briefly places it on your clipboard to paste it, marks it so clipboard managers ignore it, then restores what was there before. | Wherever you paste it. |
| Dictation history | Your recent dictations (text, time, length and the name of the app), so you can find and copy them. You can turn history off or clear it in the app. | On your Mac, inside Mneme's private app container. |
| Usage counts | Daily totals of dictations, words and speaking time, used for the free plan's monthly allowance and your stats. No text is stored. | On your Mac. |
| Settings, snippets and app styles | Your preferences, saved snippets, word replacements and the list of apps you've dictated into with their styles. | On your Mac. |
| Files you transcribe | Recordings you choose are read and transcribed on your Mac. Some formats are first converted to a temporary working copy, which is deleted as soon as transcription finishes. | The transcript is kept only where you save it. |
| Smart clean-up (optional) | Your dictated text is rewritten by a language model running on your Mac: either a model you download once, or Apple Intelligence's on-device model. | Processed in memory on your Mac. |
Permissions. macOS asks you to allow:
- Microphone, to hear you while you dictate.
- Input Monitoring, so Mneme can notice your dictation key and the Escape key while you're in other apps. Mneme also notes whether a key was pressed after a dictation, so that “Undo last dictation” never removes text you typed yourself. It never records which keys you press or what you type.
- Accessibility, so Mneme can paste text at your cursor and undo the last dictation.
You can withdraw any of these at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
3. When the app connects to the internet
Mneme works offline. It only connects to the internet in these cases:
- Downloading the optional clean-up model. If you turn on smart clean-up with the local model, Mneme downloads it once (about 870 MB) from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), operated by Hugging Face, Inc. in the United States. As with any download, Hugging Face's servers receive your IP address and standard technical details of the request. No dictated text or audio is sent. Hugging Face handles this under its own privacy policy.
- Purchases. When you view plans, buy, restore purchases, or when Mneme checks whether your subscription is active, it does so through Apple's App Store (see the next section).
4. Purchases and subscriptions
Mneme Pro is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes your payment and account details as an independent controller under the Apple Privacy Policy. We don't receive your name, email address or payment details. Apple gives us sales reports that don't identify you, and confirms to the app on your Mac whether you have an active plan.
5. Crash reports
Mneme contains no analytics or crash-reporting software. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in macOS (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may share crash reports and diagnostics about Mneme with us. Apple provides these without identifying you. We use them only to find and fix problems, on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping Mneme working (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). You can turn this sharing off in System Settings at any time.
6. This website
This website uses no cookies, analytics, advertising, tracking pixels, third-party fonts or scripts.
The site is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare Pages). To deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, Cloudflare processes technical information about each visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested. Cloudflare acts as our processor. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in providing a secure, working website (Article 6(1)(f)). See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
7. If you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use this only to reply to you and help with your request. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to you (Article 6(1)(f)), or, where your message is about something you've bought, taking steps related to that purchase (Article 6(1)(b)). Our email provider stores these messages on our behalf as a processor.
8. International transfers
Cloudflare and Hugging Face may process information in the United States and other countries outside the UK. Where we use a provider as our processor (Cloudflare), transfers are protected by safeguards recognised under UK law, such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
9. How long information is kept
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Audio | Not kept: discarded as soon as it's transcribed. |
| History, usage counts, settings and snippets on your Mac | Until you clear them or delete Mneme. History keeps your most recent 500 dictations. |
| Website request logs (Cloudflare) | For the periods set out in Cloudflare's privacy policy. |
| Emails you send us | Up to 24 months after our last exchange, then deleted. |
10. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- be informed about how your information is used (this policy);
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- have inaccurate information corrected;
- have your information erased;
- restrict or object to how we use it, including where we rely on legitimate interests;
- receive your information in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on it.
To use any of these rights, email privacy@kialharrison.com. It's free, and we'll respond within one month. We may need to confirm your identity first.
Information stored by Mneme on your Mac is not held by us, so you control it directly: clear your history in Mneme's History section, edit or delete snippets in the app, or delete everything by quitting Mneme, moving it to the Bin, and deleting the folder ~/Library/Containers/com.kialharrison.mneme.
We make no decisions about you by automated means, and we don't profile you.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113, or Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
11. Children
Mneme is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
12. Security
Mneme runs in Apple's App Sandbox, which limits what it can access on your Mac. Your dictation never leaves your device. Downloads use encrypted connections (HTTPS) and are checked against known checksums before use. Data on your Mac is protected by macOS security features such as FileVault when you have them turned on.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how your information is handled, we'll also mention it in the app's update notes.
